<p><strong>Update 16 Nov 2006:</strong><br />
I&#8217;ve now tried installing a fresh OS on a firewire drive and successfully replicated the problem. Today&#8217;s video error picture is pretty special:</p>

<p>The root cause appears to be that sometimes the MacBook Pro thinks there is a generic &#8220;VGA Display&#8221; attached, when there isn&#8217;t. If you have it set to use the external display as the main screen, you then are forced to turn on mirroring so that you can log in after waking up from sleep, etc.</p>
<p><strong>Update Dec 2006:</strong></p>
<p>The main logic board was replaced and now it&#8217;s much better!</p>
